Year 4

Year 4

Our Vision

At Bury C of E Primary School,

We love one another and are forgiving of each other,

just as in Christ God forgave us.

We speak the truth in love and show proper respect to everyone.

This is an invitation to ‘Be More Jesus’.

Our Values

Love: Dear friends, let us love one another for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:7-8

Forgiveness: Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32

Honesty: Speak the truth in love Ephesians 4:15

Respect: Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers (…) 1 Peter 2:17

General Reminders

  • Your child may choose to bring fruit or vegetables for a break time snack.
  • Our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday. Your child needs to come into school wearing their PE kit on their PE days.
  • Earrings should not be worn on P.E. days. If your child forgets to remove them, they must be removed by the child (not by staff) for PE. No responsibility can be taken for the custody of items when they are necessarily removed for PE.
  • The children will need their own water bottle in school. Please make sure that they are clearly labelled.
  • Please label all uniform/coats/shoes to ensure that it is identifiable and can be returned to the correct owner.

Our Curriculum

Please see our yearly curriculum overview to find out what your child will be learning this year.

Year 4 Curriculum Overview

Take a look at our Primary Knowledge Curriculum (PKC) Knowledge Organisers to see what your child is learning about each half term in more detail. The Knowledge Organisers are a tool that support your child's learning in school and could be a way to support their learning at home.

Year 4 Knowledge Organisers

Homework

Homework runs Friday – Friday. It is absolutely vital that your homework is completed on time and completed at home.

Reading is the corner stone of everything we do, so it is vitally important to hear your child read most nights!

In Year 4, the children are expected to:

  • Read at home daily for at least 10-15 minutes (comments should be recorded in their reading record).
  • Children will practise their times tables using the resource Times Tables Rockstars for a minimum of 30 minutes per week.
  • Practise their spellings in preparation for their spelling test every Friday morning.

Statutory Assessment – Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check

Under the current National Curriculum, children are supposed to know their times tables by the end of Year 4. The DfE says that the check is part of a new focus on mastering numeracy, giving children the skills and knowledge they need for secondary school and beyond. The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether Y4 pupils can recall their multiplication tables fluently (being able to answer times tables questions accurately and quickly, without having to work out the answers).

Children will be tested using an on-screen check (on a computer or a tablet), where they will have to answer multiplication questions against the clock. The test will last no longer than 5 minutes and is similar to other tests already used by primary schools. Their answers will be marked instantly.

Children will have 6 seconds to answer each question in a series of 25. Each question will be worth one mark and be presented to the child in this format: n1 x n2 = ____

Questions will be selected from the 121 number facts that make up the multiplication tables from 2 to 12, with a particular focus on the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables as they are considered to be the most challenging. Each question will only appear once in any 25-question series, and children won't be asked to answer reversals of a question as part of the check (so if they've already answered 3 x 4 they won't be asked about 4 x 3).

Once the child has inputted their answer on the computer / device they are using, there will be a three-second pause before the next question appears. Children will be given the opportunity to practise answering questions in this format before the official check begins.

The six-second time limit per question has been decided on by the DfE because it should allow children enough time to demonstrate their recall of times tables without giving them the time to work out the answers to each question.

Schools will have a 3-week check window in June to administer the check. Teachers will have the flexibility to administer the check to individual pupils, small groups or a whole class at the same time.

There will be no "pass mark" (expected standard threshold) and no child will "fail" the test. Pupils' individual results will be made available to schools, and the Department for Education will report national results to track how they change over time. We will share your child’s score with you by the end of the summer term.
