Our Vision

At Bury C of E Primary School,

We love one another and are forgiving of each other,

just as in Christ God forgave us.

We speak the truth in love and show proper respect to everyone.

This is an invitation to ‘Be More Jesus’.

Our Values

Love: Dear friends, let us love one another for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:7-8

Forgiveness: Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32

Honesty: Speak the truth in love Ephesians 4:15

General Reminders

  • Your child will be provided with fruit or vegetables for a break time snack.
  • Our PE day is Thursday. Your child needs to come into school wearing their PE kit on their PE days.

  • The children will need their own water bottle in school. Please make sure that they are clearly labelled.
  • Please label all uniform/coats/shoes to ensure that it is identifiable and can be returned to the correct owner.

Our Curriculum

Please see our yearly curriculum overview to find out what your child will be learning this year.

Year 2 Curriculum Overview

Take a look at our Primary Knowledge Curriculum (PKC) Knowledge Organisers to see what your child is learning about each half term in more detail. The Knowledge Organisers are a tool that support your child's learning in school and could be a way to support their learning at home.

Life in Year 2

Reading

Your child will be given a decodable book to take home to read. Our decodable books consolidate the phonics taught in your child’s classroom. With step-by-step progression, the child succeeds at each level while learning the phonics needed to become a fluent reader. This approach develops confident readers with reliable reading strategies.

Once your child has developed their phonics knowledge and skills, they will be given access to ‘Accelerated Reader’. Your child will complete a reading quiz which will determine your child’s ‘Zone of Proximal Development’ (ZPD). This range will direct your child to what level books they should read. Once your child has finished their book, they will take a quiz which includes comprehension and vocabulary questions linked to the book. Parents will be provided with a login so you can monitor your child’s progress when quizzing.

Homework

Homework runs Friday – Friday. It is absolutely vital that your homework is completed on time and completed at home. Reading is the corner stone of everything we do, so it is vitally important to hear your child read most nights!

In Year 2, the children are expected to:

  • Read at home daily for at least 10-15 minutes (comments should be recorded in their reading record).
  • Practise their number bonds / times tables using the resource Numbots/Times Tables Rockstars for a minimum of 30 minutes per week.
  • Practise their spellings/phonics in preparation for their spelling test every Friday morning.

Statutory Assessments – Key Stage 1 SATs

During Year 2, the children are expected to take part in statutory key stage 1 SATs.

The children will be completing their SATs during May 2024. The tests include: English reading, mathematics and English grammar, spelling and punctuation.

In addition to the SATs tests, teachers will be carrying out teacher assessments on the children's writing. The class teacher will use the results of these tests, along with evidence they have seen in the classroom, to make a judgement about your child’s progress and attainment. This overall picture is called a teacher assessment judgement.

Statutory Assessments – Year 2 Retake of Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

Your child will be required to re-sit the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check if they did not meet the standard threshold in Year 1. The phonics screening check will take place during the week of the 10th June 2024.

The check is made up of 40 words and usually lasts 5-10 minutes. The check is completed in school by our staff. Some words are real words, and others are nonsense, or ‘alien’ words that help to show if pupils can work out how to decode words they haven’t seen before.

The check helps us to see how pupils are progressing in phonics and where to provide additional teaching and support.

By the end of the summer term, we must report results of the check to parents.
